Easy Fixes to Help Lower Your Heating Expenses

Furnace Filters

You can save energy without spending much money this winter by changing your furnace filter once a month during the heating season. Dirty filters can restrict airflow and increase energy demand. You can save even more money by using permanent electrostatic filters (or washable/reusable filters). The washable filters can be reused for 5 to 10 years and start at about $20.

Thermostats

For every degree you lower you lower the thermostat during winter, you’ll save between 1 and 3% of your heating bill. Programmable thermostats can help with this by allowing you to pre-set your temperatures for the hours no one is home or through the night. These thermostats are widely available for as little as $50 and can save you much more each year.

Ceiling Fans

Many ceiling fans come with a handy switch allowing you to reverse the air flow. This allows the fan to circulate warm air pooled near the ceiling back down into the living space.

Windows & Doors

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, simple leaks can sap home energy efficiency by 5% to 30% a year. Be sure to check each year around windows and doors for any drafts or gaps.
